Lea Rosh

German woman ‘honored’

A
GERMAN magazine named the woman behind
Germany’s Holocaust Memorial as the
most embarrassing Berliner of the year.
On the cover of the Dec. 31
[2003]
edition of Tip,
Lea Rosh (right in
photo),
who pushed for the creation
of the memorial, is seen with her feet
stuck in cement blocks.

[Lea Rosh]Construction of the memorial, a giant field of 2,700
cement steles, hit a snag earlier this year when it turned out that a branch of Degussa, the firm responsible for protecting the memorial from graffiti, had produced the Zyklon B gas used to kill Jews in Auschwitz.

Rosh, who is not Jewish, told the magazine
Der Spiegel that she had not known about the firm’s history. The magazine’s art editor, Mike
Schluettler
, admitted that some found the Tip cover tasteless.
