Responding to Mr. Sverker’s letter: As it happens, I have been involved in a long thread trying to bring together some of the evidence and arguments for the Icebreaker thesis.
Stalin
apparently gave two speeches
on May 5, 1941, both of which are presented in a new Russian collection under the editorship of a Mr. Yakovlev. The text of the first speech appears as an appendix to Prof Albert Weeks‘s book Stalin’s Other War. It will be interesting to compare it with the versions based on the testimony of captured Soviet officers. I shall send you a copy as soon as we get our hands on the book, presently to be released as a paperback.
I am, by no means, a convinced advocate of the
‘preventitive war’ thesis, but the more I see, the more I like.
