William Rubinstein of the Univ. of Wales has shown, the case of Winston’s schoolfriend and later India Secretary, Leo Amery , was ‘possibly the most remarkable example of concealment of identity in 20th century British political history.’
In his 1955 autobiography Amery wrote that his father was English and that his mother was born Elisabeth Leitner , a Hungarian exile who had fled via Constantinople to England; Rubinstein’s convincing research establishes that she was born Erszebet Saphir in Pest, in the Jewish quarter of the Hungarian capital.
