Robert\nBarnaby\nasks,\n, if Sonderkommando men wore\na dogtag?
Â
Did\nSonderkommando men wear a dog-tag
I HAVE written numerous Jewish\norganizations, including the Holocaust\nMemorial Center in\nWashington D.C. information center. I have waited\nover a week for a response from these organizations\nand have not received any type of acknowledgment.\nCan you please help answer this question for me?\n
Can you please give me your opinion if the\nfollowing item is a Holocaust artifact? A few years\nback I picked up a piece which I thought was a\ncoin. It turned out to be some sort of tag, or\ndog-tag. This is the description of it: its round,\nbrass, the size of a half dollar or slightly\nbigger. On the front, in the center is a perfectly\nengraved Star of David. Along the round bottom, in\nblock letters, is the word “Sonderkommando”.
On the reverse side, stamped, (not engraved like\nthe front), is the SS insignia; a pair of\nlightening bolts along with some type of serial\nnumbers.
There is also a hole on the top that either a\nneck chain, rope or safety pin can fit through\nwhich leads me to believe that it is some sort of\nidentification tag or dogtag. Based on this\ndescription, can you please explain what this is,\nwhat it was used for, who it belonged to or any\nother information that you may have on this\nitem?
