I AM an Italian reader of yours who stumbled in\nyour writings after some personal research on the\nholocaust.
I’ve read the Leuchter report and was pointed\nout a web page (Nizkor)\nwhich tries to refute Mr.\nLeuchter‘s thesis. I’m by no means an\nhistorian and I’m interested in your opinion on\nthis research (or if you can point me to additional\nmaterial on the topic).
I know you are busy with your work and, sadly,\nbusy defending yourself from absurd accusations\nwhich try to limit your (our) right of freedom of\nspeech, so don’t worry if you cannot answer to my\nmail.
David\nIrving answers:
LEUCHTER’S work was\nlimited to digging out thirty or more samples from\nthe fabric of buildings popularly identified as\nhomicidal gas chambers in Auschwitz.\nThis required no special skill.
He handed the samples to a\nprofessional forensic laboratory in America for\ntesting. This laboratory had the requisite special\nskill. It found no significant trace of cyanide\ncompounds in the samples he provided from the\nhomicidal gas chambers in Auschwitz, but massive\nquantities in the brickwork of a fumigation chamber\nused to fumigate clothing.
(Humorous note: After they\nwere informed that the samples came from Auschwitz,\nthe laboratory director said that in that case he\nmight have found a different result!)
I read Leuchter’s\nreport with the\nappendices, the\nlaboratory report tables, in April 1988 and was\nvery impressed. I still am. It does not mean that\nthere were no gassings in Auschwitz, but it\ncertainly casts doubts about any part that those\nbuildings may have played. Since big money is\ninvolved, really Big Money, you will understand why\nMr Leuchter became an object of hatred and a target\nfor arrest and professional persecution.
