Tell us about Fred Leuchter’s part!

I AM an Italian reader of yours who stumbled in your writings after some personal research on the holocaust.

I’ve read the Leuchter report and was pointed out a web page (Nizkor) which tries to refute Mr.
Leuchter‘s thesis. I’m by no means an historian and I’m interested in your opinion on this research (or if you can point me to additional material on the topic).

I know you are busy with your work and, sadly, busy defending yourself from absurd accusations which try to limit your (our) right of freedom of speech, so don’t worry if you cannot answer to my mail.

LEUCHTER’S work was limited to digging out thirty or more samples from the fabric of buildings popularly identified as homicidal gas chambers in Auschwitz.
This required no special skill.

He handed the samples to a professional forensic laboratory in America for testing. This laboratory had the requisite special skill. It found no significant trace of cyanide compounds in the samples he provided from the homicidal gas chambers in Auschwitz, but massive quantities in the brickwork of a fumigation chamber used to fumigate clothing.

(Humorous note: After they were informed that the samples came from Auschwitz, the laboratory director said that in that case he might have found a different result!)

I read Leuchter’s report with the appendices, the laboratory report tables, in April 1988 and was very impressed. I still am. It does not mean that there were no gassings in Auschwitz, but it certainly casts doubts about any part that those buildings may have played. Since big money is involved, really Big Money, you will understand why
Mr Leuchter became an object of hatred and a target for arrest and professional persecution.
