VICTOR
OVER HOLOCAUST DENIERS TO RECEIVE 2002
ETERNAL LIGHT AWARD

ON October 27 [2002], at the
Fourth Annual Eternal Light Award Dinner to be held at the Longboat Key Club, The
Center for Catholic-Jewish Studies will present its 2002 Eternal Light Award to
Dr. Deborah E. Lipstadt, Ph.D. The
Center is a cooperative endeavor of Saint
Leo University and The American Jewish
Committee. Each year the Award is presented to “an individual who has exhibited an outstanding contribution in the cause of interfaith relations and human rights.”

Deborah Lipstadt’s qualifications to receive this honor are outstanding. She gained international acclaim in 2000 for her successful refutation of the libel suit in London, England, brought by
Holocaust denier David Irving. The
Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish and
Holocaust Studies at Emory University, Dr.
Lipstadt most recently authored Denying the Holocaust: The Growing Assault on
Truth and Memory.

Her thorough investigation received front page reviews in the New York Times, the Washington
Post and the foreign press. In 1997
Dr. Lipstadt received Emory University’s highest teaching award, based on alumni nominations for the professor who had the most impact on them.

Professor Lipstadt is frequently called upon by the media to analyze matters of contemporary and Jewish interest. She has appeared on CNN, CBS’s Sixty Minutes,
NBC’s Today Show, ABC’s Good Morning
America, National Public Radio and is a frequent contributor and widely quoted in a variety of newspapers including the
Los Angeles Times, Washington Post,
Atlanta Constitution, New York Times,
Time, and Newsweek.

Rabbi James Rudin summed up
Deborah Lipstadt’s contributions to
Catholic-Jewish dialogue: “Her legal victories in a London courtroom have permanently exposed all the Holocaust deniers for what they truly are —
pernicious liars, anti-Semites, and enemies of truth.

Because of her remarkable academic achievements and her courage to legally take on one of the world’s worst
Holocaust deniers, Professor Lipstadt has provided both Jews and Christians a shining example of superb scholarship and moral strength. Interreligious dialogue stands immeasurably strengthened because of her historic efforts and her willingness to be a personal beacon of truth and justice.”
