2 Israelis involved in chase now in federal custody

–Two Israeli men who led Unicoi
County authorities on a high-speed chase in a rented moving truck have been turned over to federal immigration authorities.
Schmuel Dahan, 23, and Almaliach
Naor, 19, both of Tel Aviv, were transferred to
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement after pleading guilty to state charges in Unicoi County
Sessions Court. Dahan pleaded guilty to evading arrest, and Naor to possession of a fraudulent identification card.
Both men were sentenced
to 30 days in jail, which was suspended since
they are in the custody of federal
authorities.
It appears there was no criminal activity and that the two men were in the United States on tourist visas but had jobs, a violation of immigration policy, Unicoi County Sheriff Kent
Harris said.
The FBI has monitored the situation but not entered the case, FBI spokesman Gary Kidder
said.
The pair were arrested May 8 after they led
Harris on a two-mile chase on U.S. 23 near the
North Carolina state line. Witnesses told authorities that a bottle was tossed from the truck during the pursuit.
Harris said the two men insisted that they did not throw a bottle from the truck.
A lawyer for the two men said they rented the truck to haul furniture and got lost when they got off Interstate 26.
