It is also the 55th [ sic ] anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising [ 1943 ]. For years, the coinciding of these dates has had a profound impact upon me. If my four grandparents had not left Poland in the first decade of this century, I would probably have never been born.

This year, on April 19th, you and I will have the opportunity to hear from Abraham Foxman , one of the great leaders of American Jewry who was a child survivor of the Holocaust. Mr. Foxman, who is National Director of the Anti-Defamation League , will be the guest speaker at Temple Sholom's 9:00 AM Brotherhood Breakfast. Born in Poland in 1940 , Mr. Foxman was saved from the Holocaust as an infant by his Polish Catholic nursemaid who baptized and raised him as a Catholic during the war years. His parents survived the war, but 14 members of his family were lost. He arrived in America in 1950 with his parents after a lengthy custody battle with the former nursemaid. Mr. Foxman is a member of the President's U.S.

Holocaust Memorial Council as well as Vice President of the American Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors. He is a recognized authority on the Holocaust and Jewish resistance to the Nazis. Mr. Foxman has written extensively on these subjects and is a frequent guest on national news programs. A graduate of City College of New York, Mr. Foxman also holds degrees from New York University School of Law, Jewish Theological Seminary and The New School for Social Research. As well, he was the co-recipient of the Martin Luther King, Jr . and Donald R. Mintz Freedom and Justice Award in 1997. Mr. Foxman's topic will be "Remind and Remember: Teaching the Lessons of the Holocaust to Future Generations." 2000 David Irving
