About 40 people picketed outside the New Zealand Herald head office in Auckland’s Albert St in protest at the sacking of cartoonist Malcolm Evans .
Mr Evans, cartoonist of the year at the Qantas Media Awards in June, said he was told his work was no longer required after he refused to accept a directive from editor-in-chief Gavin Ellis to stop submitting cartoons critical of Israel. Mr Ellis earlier said it was wrong to suggest Mr Evans was sacked for refusing to stop drawing cartoons critical of Israel but on legal advice he would not comment further.
Protest organiser Mike Treen said yesterday’s protest was about freedom of speech, political censorship and breaches of individual rights. “It is about ensuring the Herald is kept accountable,” he said. “They are the only daily in Auckland. They have not responded to our letters.” Mr Treen said the Herald had not given any coverage of Mr Evans’ sacking, including not printing letters critical of the move. “They have stayed silent about sacking Malcolm Evans. It is not good enough.”
