Searchlight and Gerald Gable Simon Wiesenthal Center Surfwatch Internet censorship To the Editor: WHAT irony that Sol Littman , spokesman for the Simon Wiesenthal Centre in Toronto, admonishes your editor to “Let’s be honest” following his attack on immigration critic Paul Fromm (“Unholy alliance,” Letters, National Post, Aug. 28, 1999); I say “irony” because past utterances Mr. Littman made in public discourse turned out to be anything but honest. For example: During the mid-1980s, Mr.
Littman alleged that from Buenos Aires in 1962 Dr. Josef Mengele had once applied for a visa to emigrate to Canada; suggesting the notorious Auschwitz physician might even have set foot on Canadian soil. But when asked to supply proof of these hoary allegations, Mr. Littman lamely conceded to Justice Jules Deschênes [ Deschênes Report, p. 82 ] that he could not do so: “Well, let me put it this way.
We have accepted the fact that Mengele did not come to Canada and, in all likelihood, never applied to come over to Canada. We had no difficulty accepting that.” When Mr. Littman utters a stock phrase like “Let’s be honest,” I catch a whiff of old deceptions. Falsus in unum , falsus in omnibus , as the ancient Romans used to say.
