Irving hatte das von ihm selbst angestrengte Verleumdungsverfahren gegen die Professorin verloren und war vom Richter als “aktiver Holocaust-Leugner, Antisemit und Rassist” bezeichnet worden.
Nun muss der 62-jährige Brite für die Kosten der Verteidigung in Höhe von über sechs Millionen Mark aufkommen. Irving hat inzwischen angekündigt, er werde gegen das Urteil in die Berufung gehen. Der einstige Bestsellerautor hatte Lipstadt verklagt, weil diese ihn einen “Hitler-Bewunderer” und einen der “gefährlichsten Sprecher für die Leugnung des Holocaust” genannt hatte. Der Richter gab jedoch Lipstadt nach einem dreimonatigen Verfahren Recht.
