Real History and the brains behind the international drugs trade The Index to the Traditional Enemies of Free Speech Alphabetical index (text) Tel Aviv, Aharoni gets 12 years for attempted drug smuggling By Haaretz Service TEL Aviv District Court sentenced Rahamim Aharoni on Thursday to 12 years in prison for attempting to smuggle 1.3 million Ecstasy pills from Belgium into the United States.

Aharoni attempted to smuggle the drugs together with two partners, Ophir Lever and Ophir Weisman , who are being held in detention in the U.S. The three traveled to Belgium in August 2002 to hide the drugs inside diamond polishing machines and ship them to the U.S. The drugs were found by Belgian police. Weisman and Lever flew to the U.S. in order to ensure that the drugs reached the two people who had purchased them and were picked up by American law enforcement authorities.

Aharoni was arrested in October 2002. The sentence was issued following a plea bargain made between Aharoni and the prosecutor in which he admitted to the charges against him in exchange for a more lenient sentence. The Thursday sentence includes an earlier 4.5 year suspended sentence. Aharoni, 65, was an organized crime leader in the 1970s and was a primary police target together with his colleague Tuvia Oshri .

In the early 1980s, the two were convicted of the murders of Ezer Cohen and Amos Orion in a Bat Yam factory. They were given life sentences. Aharoni’s sentence was reduced to 26 years, 17 of which he actually served.
