Israel, Israeli crime kingpin Abergil arrested in the Netherlands By Roni Singer ONE of Israel’s crime kingpins was arrested on Tuesday at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport on suspicion of drug trafficking . Itzik Abergil, who is suspected of heading and operating an international crime organization, was arrested by the Dutch police before boarding a flight to Israel, surrounded by several bodyguards and aides.
The police, who were waiting at the airport with arrest warrants, also took several of Abergil’s aides into custody. Abergil is suspected of running a huge outfit of dozens — and possibly hundreds — of criminals in Israel and overseas. Among other things, he is wanted for numerous cases of robbery and money laundering. However, by yesterday afternoon the Dutch police told Abergil that he was arrested only on suspicion of drug trafficking between Belgium and Holland.
Israel does not intend to ask for Abergil’s extradition at this point, although police say he is the most prominent racketeer in the country and has been at the top of the most-wanted list for more than six months. The police refused to comment on Abergil’s arrest yesterday. However, police sources said the unit’s detectives cooperated with Holland to bring about Abergil’s arrest.
Abergil, who spent many years in prison in Israel after being convicted of murder, signed a contract with the prosecution to leave the country for about 18 months. He returned to Israel only about six weeks ago, after wandering among Germany, Holland, Belgium, Spain, Miami, and Thailand. Despite his travels — or because of them – Abergil accumulated increasing power and continued operating his organization from overseas, police said.
Most of the bloody underworld events in Israel during that time are attributed to Abergil’s organization and its power struggles with rivals. Abergil’s lawyer, Sharon Nahari , yesterday commented from Holland: “We are astonished at the suspicions, that Abergil dealt in drug trafficking in Europe. He has no connection to such crimes and we believe this will be proved and he will be released soon.”
