...Universities,
colleges and student unions have lined up to tell
the Jewish Chronicle that [David Irving]
would not be welcome on their
premises. London, Friday, October 5, 2007 Leader Deny
David Irving AS FAR as
comeback tours go, David Irving's ranks
about as highly as a Eurovision 1986 reunion. It is
difficult to believe, as he claims, that there are
as many as twenty places across Britain willing to
host him and his detestable views. Indeed, universities, colleges
and student unions have lined up to tell the
JC that the notorious
Holocaust denier -- who served
time in an Austrian prison for espousing unlawfully
pernicious views -- would not be welcome on
their premises. This is a sterling example of how
civil society, rather than the law, must on
occasion act to take a moral stand. It is perfectly legal in this
country for Irving to publish, promote and
otherwise spew his pseudo-academic nonsense.
Freedom of speech is one of the principles our
society holds most dear.
But we need to protect
that privilege from those who abuse it --
Holocaust-deniers,
racists and hate-mongers included. That is why we urge any
public-hall booking clerk, university
administrator or private landlord to refuse to
give Irving a platform when his people come
calling. For if each of them denies the
existence of David Irving, in their own small ways,
then that will minimise his opportunities to preach
his poison from a public stage -- and lo, he will
diminish even further in the public mind. The risks of doing otherwise
were in evidence last week, when Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad, the President of Iran, was granted
a platform at Columbia University in New York.
Ahmadinejad emerged the clear winner from the
encounter, despite such ludicrous statements as "In
Iran, we don't have homosexuals like in your
country" (raising the question of why Tehran
enforces the death penalty for a non-existent
phenomenon). No; such people must be starved
the oxygen of oratory at every
opportunity. [Website comment:

perhaps?] -
