David Jones writes in puzzlement

Austrian Jew emigrated 1940

Dear Sir,
THE Daily Telegraph on or about Wednesday 30th August carried the obituary of an Chassidic Jewish community leader in London. In this piece it was reported that upon the German Anschluss of Austria in 1938 he was arrested, only to be released in 1940, where upon he left for Palestine.
I thought that this little snippet deserved some comment, since it was at odds with the universally accepted view of vigourous repression of the Jewish population. Unfortnately The Telegraph did not expand on the matter.
I remain
Yours faithfully
