 In February 1970 David
Irving (left) lost the libel action brought by
Captain Jack E Broome, the escort commander
in the disastrous July 1942 North Russian convoy
PQ.17; he and his publishers were ordered to pay
£48,000 damages to Broome, and costs of around
half a million pounds. Outside the court Irving
shook Broome's hands and said , "I bear you no ill
feelings." The sentence made the front page
