Holocaust denial is anti-Semitism

By Audrey Franklin, Clyde McKenzie and Ardee Imerman

A HOLOCAUST denier has come to Boulder to spread a message of lies and deceptions about the Holocaust, the genocide of the 20th century responsible for the murder of 6 million Jews.

David IrvingDavid Irving (right) spoke at the University of Colorado on Friday, Sept. 10. Unfortunately, by speaking from the university platform, Irving gained a patina of legitimacy. Irving has the right to speak. However, unknowing and unsuspecting listeners might have believed him to be a reputable historian. Such a belief could not be further from the truth.

Holocaust denial, which its propagandists coyly misrepresent as "historical revisionism," has become one of the most important vehicles for contemporary anti-Semitism. Dressing themselves in pseudo-academic garb, the Holocaust deniers have adopted the term "revisionism" in order to mask and legitimate their enterprise.

The deniers do not deny that Hitler's government engaged in persecution of and discrimination against Jews in Germany and German-controlled countries. They deny, however, the existence of any German plan or program to subject the Jews of Europe to genocide. The insidious message of the Holocaust deniers is that people have come to accept uncritically the story of the Holocaust because they have been propagandized with deliberate lies for more than 50 years. The purpose of the Holocaust mythology, the deniers assert, is the inculcation of a sense of guilt in the white, Western Christian world in order to advance an international Jewish agenda centered in the Zionist enterprise of the state of Israel.

David Irving is one of the world's most popular purveyors of Holocaust denial. Since 1963, he has been an apologist for Nazi Germany, writing history books that draw moral equivalencies between Allied actions and the crimes of the Third Reich. He continues to refer to Jews as "Shylocks" and "our traditional enemy." His Web site dwells on the "international Jewish conspiracy" against him and says that the "big lie" of the Holocaust is

"designed to distract attention from even bigger crimes than what the Nazis did ... designed to justify, both in arrears and in advance, the bigger crimes in the financial world and elsewhere that are being committed by the survivors of the Holocaust."

Deborah LipstadtA turning point in Irving's trajectory as a Holocaust denier came in 1996, when he sued American Professor Deborah Lipstadt of Emory University (left) and her British publisher Penguin Books, Ltd., in a British court, charging her with libel for characterizing him in her book "Denying the Holocaust" as a Holocaust denier.

Concluding that it is "incontrovertible that Irving qualifies as a Holocaust denier," a justice ruled in favor of Lipstadt and her publishers, stating that

"Irving has misstated historical evidence; adopted positions which run counter to the weight of the evidence; given credence to unreliable evidence and disregarded or dismissed credible evidence. ... [A]ll Irving's historiographical 'errors' ... tend to exonerate Hitler or to reflect Irving's partisanship for the Nazi leaders ... consistent with a willingness on Irving's part to knowingly misrepresent or manipulate or put a 'spin' on the evidence so as to make it conform with his own preconceptions."

David Irving, and those of his ilk, seek to plant seeds of questioning and doubt about the Holocaust in their audiences. Do not be fooled or misled. Holocaust denial is nothing more than a contemporary form of the classic anti-Semitic doctrine of the evil, manipulative and threatening world Jewish conspiracy. It was this doctrine that was instrumental in laying the groundwork for the Holocaust. What is on the surface a denial of the reality of genocide is, at its core, an echoing and persistence of the ideology and hatred that led to the Holocaust in the first place.
