S.R.M. 895

The following conversation took place between:

Oberst Hesse (Feldkommandantur 758) captured nr Maubeuge, 3 Sep 44, and an AAO [American Army officer]:

Information received: 15 Sep 1944:

Oberst Hesse: "There is a whole section of people in the SS who are strongly opposed to the Nazis. They express themselves more openly than the troops. We are not sure how far that penetrates to Himmler's circles, and whether Himmler himself might not one day do . . . against Hitler.'

[Hesse also stated that he knew Treskow and Mertz von Quirnheim.]

. . macht, gegen Hitler.']

S.R.M.852

Oberst Müller-Römer, Nachrichten Kommandantur Paris, capt Paris, Aug 25, 1944.

Information received: 29 Aug 1944:

Oberst Müller-Römer: "Brauchitsch wrote a marvellous article of defence a week ago, which began strangely enough: 'It will seem incomprehensible to many a German officer that the Führer has appointed Himmler, the Reichsführer of the SS, as commander-in-chief of the reserve Army. But on consideration it will be realised that it's right.'

S.R.M.901

Oberstltn Dr Ing Schulz, Kommandant Gross Paris, captured Paris Aug 25, 1944.

Information received: Sep 16, 1944:

Oberstltn Dr Ing Schulz: In private Himmler is the pleasantest of the lot, and the only one who doesn't put anything in his own pocket. Whereas the head of the SA [Viktor Lutze] who was in his time quite a poor devil -- at first he had a medium-sized villa at Dahlem, and then suddenly he had a large villa at Dahlem -- Lutze had a car accident on his way back from a food scrounging expedition. His daughter was driving, as far as I know, and they were very drunk. Then they had a smash … on the arterial road between Wannsee and Zehlendorf.'

Major Zorn, CO 3 Bn, 37 SS Regt, 17 SS Div, capd near Metz, Nov 10, 1944:

Information received: Nov 24, 1944:

Major Zorn: A member of the Leibstandarte told me of the following incident at the time [May 1941]. The Reichsführer visited the officers mess of the Leibstandarte and they had a picture of Rudolf Hess there. It was just at that particular time. The Reichsführer visited them often at the Leibstandarte, and knew the room well. They had turned the picture of Rudolf Hess round with its face to the wall. They were all wondering what the Reichsführer would do. Without saying a word the Reichsführer made a bee line for the picture, turned it round and hung it properly in its place again, and then sat down. I heard about it from several sides. I don't know who it was I was taking to recently but it was someone who visits Hess's house himself. Frau Hess on principle doesn't talk about the incident, but everyone has the impression that it really wasn't the journey of a man out of his mind.

Major Zorn, CO 3 Bn, 37 SS Regt, 17 SS Div, captd near Metz, Nov 10, 1944:

Information received: Nov 24, 1944:

Major Zorn: [. . .] It is just the same with Heinrich Himmler, he inspected me twice and each time I was glad when he had gone. I don't like seeing him, I prefer it when he makes a speech on the wireless. He's a glutton for work himself and expects the same from others, they don't have any private life. A very good friend of mine was his second or third adjutant. [etc]
