TRANSLATION

GUSE: The SS Führer is frightfully strict; pleas for mercy by SS troops very seldom succeed. We had one man in Holland, who had stolen three Gulden from a cupboard, and three or four cigarettes. What do you think they did with him? They shot him. The man had been in the army for six years and had never received any disciplinary punishment during the whole of that time, and then in this case hew as shot! The Reichsführer said, "It must be carried out as a warning example," and of course his parents made plea after plea for mercy. Even his Kompanie commander, who was his immediate superior in disciplinary matters, pleaded for the man. That is just one case; I know of several which always shocked me very much at that time. For instance after my brother, who was adjutant to Sepp Dietrich, had visited the war academy, he had to do another three months at the Artillery school at Döberitz, and he let his wife come into the camp there, although it was strictly forbidden. The man was given fourteen days'; solitary confinement by the Reichsführer; then there was a question of demotion, and ten he was barred from promotion for over a year. All that was carried out. Then his wife was also treated in the worst possible way. She did not even have a chance to say "Goodbye" to my brother. Then as well as all that: after those three months those newly promoted officers were sent straight to the front without any leave.'

GUSE: We had people who had studied in England. They formed an officers' patrol and used to penetrate 20 - 30 km into enemy territory, where they were provisioned by the Americans; they had their paybooks and proper American uniforms; they had proper paybooks with forged photographs, although that was done by the Gestapo. They were sometimes out for four to five days; once it lasted longer than that, and they were seriously wondering at the Division whether they would return at all, but they did return, and with a terrific amount of map material. They had done extremely accurate work and had found out all the battery positions. One of them was dressed as an American officer.'
